Hard to believe we’re halfway through spring already and will be welcoming summer in a few short weeks!

April has been a busy month in Lansing and in the district. My team and I are committed to doing all we can to support everyone in our community, via legislation, community outings and making our communities more affordable, safe and equitable for all.

Legislative Updates: 

  • Contraception Package: This month, the House Health Policy Committee voted on a package of bills to ensure that health insurance plans cover a 12-month supply of birth control and mandate coverage for hormonal contraceptives prescribed by pharmacists.
    • Additionally, they propose granting pharmacists the authority to both prescribe and dispense certain contraceptives, thereby enhancing accessibility to these medications.
  • Community Action Agencies Package: My bill in this package, HB 5061, modernizes the enabling statute for community action agencies (CAAs) statewide, which was last changed in 1981.
    • Community action agencies were created to localize the fight against poverty — acting with flexibility to combat poverty in a way that a local community decides is best.
  • Computer Science Legislation: This month, I am especially excited to announce my bill that would require all public high schools in Michigan to offer a computer science class.
    • Computing jobs are the #1 source of new wages in America, and prioritizing computer science education offerings in our high schools will ensure enough Michigan students graduate with the skills needed to fill these jobs.

Michigan Independent Colleges and Universities & Michigan Community College Association Advocacy Days: This month, I met with leaders and advocates from MICU and MCCA. Our conversation was about how we can make college more affordable and accessible for everyone looking to advance their careers.

  • Michigan Achievement Scholarship is an excellent opportunity for those interested in a skilled trade, two-year or four-year post-secondary program. Those who qualify could receive up to $2, 750 to attend a Michigan community college, $4,000 to attend a Michigan private college or university and up to $5,500 to attend a Michigan public university or enroll in a four-year degree program at a Michigan community college.

Library Day

Michigan Library Association Advocacy Day: I was honored to speak at the Michigan Library Association’s Advocacy Day alongside my colleagues state Rep. Veronica Paiz (D-Harper Woods) and state Sen. Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing). It was incredible to see so many passionate individuals come together to advocate for the importance of libraries in our communities!

  • P.S.! Our next coffee hour takes place at Kent District Library’s Grandville Branch on May 3 at 9 a.m. Come on out to hear about legislative updates as well as see what our libraries have to offer. I’ll even buy the coffee!

Welding

MI Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights Mobile Class: The Carpenters recently visited the capitol to show off their mobile classroom. I got to try my hand at virtual welding and a few other skills. I also got to meet some of the students in the program. Not only are they incredibly talented, they’re proud and passionate about the work they do. The truck goes to different high schools to showcase what the jobs of carpenters and millwrights look like.

  • The Michigan Achievement Scholarship is also an excellent opportunity for those interested in a trade. Students could receive up to $2,000 per year for up to two years while they earn an industry-recognized certificate.

Coffee Hours:

One of my favorite things I get to do as a state representative is meet in-person with you over a warm cup of coffee. This past month, we were hosted by the Walker Senior Neighbors Center.

For our next coffee hour, we will be headed to the Kent District Library at the Grandville branch on Friday, May 3 from 9-10 a.m. We hope to see you there!
