LANSING, Mich., May 8, 2024 — Today, the Michigan House of Representatives passed its budget. From attracting businesses that create more jobs, supporting working families, and helping students achieve success — the proposed budget will make opportunities for Michiganders promising and plentiful. Among its key provisions are significant investments in local governments, housing, child care, education, and public infrastructure. Notably, it continues funding for a program to keep veterans housed, as well as funding for community safety and emergency response. It also invests in academic programs dedicated to solving cold cases and providing scholarships for police academy recruits. After voting, state Rep. Jason Morgan (D-Ann Arbor), chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Military and Veteran Affairs and State Police, issued the following statement:
“This budget represents our unwavering commitment to supporting our nation’s heroes and looking out for our neighbors when they’re in need. We’re continuing my program to keep our veterans housed. This year we’re investing in veteran transportation to help people across Michigan who served our country reach healthcare services. We’re also allocating funds to support local communities impacted by severe weather events, preparing Michigan for a climate resilient. I’m really proud to have played a role in shaping a budget that prioritizes the well-being of our veterans and the safety of our hometowns. With this budget, we’ve laid the groundwork for a stronger and safer Michigan.”
