LANSING, Mich., Aug 2, 2024 — Earlier this week, new Title IX regulations were imposed by the U.S. District Court in Kansas. These regulations strip more than 100+ Michigan public schools of the expanded Title IX protections for LGBTQ+ and pregnant students. The court ruled that the Title IX protections cannot be enforced at schools attended by the children of certain conservative organization members, including the Moms of Liberty. While Michigan students are still under the protection of the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, this ruling is a direct attack against the LGBTQ+ community not only across Michigan, but across the United States. The injunctions imposed by Justice John Broomes out of the U.S District Court in Kansas is a response to the Biden-Harris administration’s hard work to protect students and educators. Prohibiting Title IX regulations in select schools across the state leaves vulnerable students at risk. Michigan Democrats are working hard to secure necessary protections for the LGBTQ+ community. The LGBTQ+ Caucus issued the following statement:

“We are deeply upset by this ruling. Title IX and the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act are key to keeping LGBTQ+ students and educators across Michigan safe. The newly introduced Title IX protections ensure that schools are a place kids can learn freely without discrimination. We are confident the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act will continue to defend and secure the rights of the LGBTQ+ community across Michigan, despite the attempts of conservative groups. Michigan Dems have been, and remain, committed to protecting every Michigander.”
