WARREN, Mich., Aug. 5, 2024 — A 2-year-old boy shot himself with an unsecured gun at his babysitter’s house Saturday evening in Warren. The toddler is currently in stable condition at an area hospital, according to the Detroit Free Press. State Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren), who represents the district in which the incident took place, issued the following statement in response to the incident:

“I am devastated by the recent incidence of gun violence that endangered a young child in Warren. I extend my deepest sympathies to the boy’s family and loved ones, and I wish him a smooth road to recovery. No parent should ever have to fear for their child’s life while they are at a trusted adult’s home, whether that be a babysitter, friend or neighbor’s residence.

“Recently, our community has been devastated by acts of gun violence in our neighborhoods. My heart goes out to all those affected by the unimaginable loss and pain this has caused in our community. This senseless violence underscores an urgent need to mitigate gun violence, and to ensure our neighborhoods and homes are places where our children can safely grow up.

“Gun violence in the home is preventable. Michigan’s safe storage laws are designed to ensure unattended weapons are securely locked and out of reach of individuals who may be a danger to themselves or others, including young children. It is integral that we as a community work together to ensure everyone acts in accordance with Michigan’s safe storage laws. We must unite to protect our children, and work to prevent incidents like this from occurring again.”
