MARQUETTE, Mich., Aug. 16, 2024 — Following up on her ongoing advocacy and bill introduction this week to address the staffing crisis in Michigan’s prisons, State Rep. Jenn Hill (D-Marquette) announced today that she will join corrections officers for informational pickets at the Baraga Correctional Facility and Marquette Branch Prison next week.

“As always, I want to make clear that I stand with working people across the UP and across Michigan,” Hill said. “Our state’s corrections officers are being stretched too thin, and legislative action is long overdue. This staffing crisis should be top of mind for all of Michigan’s legislators.”

The picket at Baraga Correctional Facility will take place from 1 – 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20. The picket at the Marquette Branch Prison will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 21 from 1 – 4 p.m.

Earlier this week, Hill introduced legislation to bolster recruitment efforts by eliminating certain education requirements that corrections officers must complete for certification. Hill has also been a staunch supporter of legislation to make corrections officers eligible to participate in the State Police Retirement System hybrid pension plan, which she introduced in the House. She has called on the Michigan House Speaker to make these bills a priority.
