LANSING, Mich., Sept 25, 2024 — Michigan House of Representatives passed House Bill 5717 today, introduced by state Rep. Amos O’Neal (D- Saginaw), to rename a portion of I-75 in honor of the late Michigan State Police Trooper Joel E. Popp. The legislation commemorates Trooper Popp who tragically lost his life in a crash while responding to a stopped vehicle on the highway. After the bill passage, O’Neal issued the following statement:
“Trooper Popp dedicated his life to serving the Michigan State Police, exemplifying outstanding service and commitment. He was not only a devoted officer but also a loving father and husband, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and sacrifice. This honor aims to recognize his contributions to public safety and his enduring impact on the community. Trooper Popp’s service with the Michigan State Police and for the people of Saginaw set the bar high for what it meant to be a good public servant and family man.”
