House Dems remain committed to ensuring breathing room for Michigan families
LANSING, Mich., Feb. 26, 2025 — House Democrats walked onto the floor with an energy for positive change today as they attended the joint legislative session to hear Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s seventh State of the State Address. As the governor discussed her plan to lower costs for hardworking Michiganders, stimulate job growth, boost energy assistance and expand child care access, House Democrats reaffirmed their continued dedication to building people up in communities across the state.
“Tonight, Michigan’s legislators came together to share our dedication and passion for serving the people of Michigan. Now, we must champion policies that lend support and further the values of Michigan’s families,” said Democratic Floor Leader John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming). “I am proud to help lead my fellow House Democrats who are energized to build Michigan into the best place to start and care for your family. From affordable childcare to lowering everyday expenses, we’re fighting to give families across the state more breathing room.”
The address strongly echoed one of the top priorities of House Democrats this term — building a stronger economy that supports every Michigander’s right to economic freedom.
“A huge part of giving more breathing room to the folks who need it most is relieving them of having to worry about essential household needs like energy. Michiganders deserve to go to bed at night knowing they will have power, no matter the weather,” said state Rep. Helena Scott (D-Detroit). “House Democrats have long put people’s voices at the forefront of energy conversations, and tonight’s address only amplified our dedication to fighting for reliable energy assistance in every community.”
“Michigan’s middle- and working-class families deserve legislators who fight for tax cuts and consumer protections that put dollars back in their pockets,” said state Rep. Jennifer Conlin (D-Ann Arbor Charter Township). “We won’t stop fighting to deliver relief to everyday families and to make sure the wealthiest in our country and corporations pay their fair share so Medicaid and Medicare are protected from cuts.”
Whitmer also emphasized plans to boost job growth across the state to build up Michigan’s economy. While increasing good-paying jobs would provide income stability to more families, she also spoke to lowering the costs of housing to ensure every Michigander also has a stable roof over their head.
“The governor’s plans to increase safe, affordable housing in our state echo my long term efforts to solve Michigan’s housing crisis and get a roof over every family’s heads,” said state Rep. Kristian Grant (D-Grand Rapids). “Michiganders deserve governance that builds people up and that recognizes the immense value of supporting these commonsense projects that ensure every person can access the essentials. House Democrats will continue fighting to make life easier in the Great Lakes State.”
