Celebrating Older Americans Month

May is nationally acknowledged as Older Americans Month. During this time we recognize older Americans’ contributions, highlight aging trends and reaffirm our commitment to serving older adults. This year’s theme is Flip the Script on Aging – encouraging individuals and communities to challenge stereotypes and dispel misconceptions.

We celebrated Older Michiganians Day on Wednesday, May 7, on the Capitol lawn. I was happy to visit with The Senior Alliance Area Agency on Aging 1-C. In 2025 it is estimated that there are nearly 2 million people 65 and older in Michigan. The governor’s fiscal year 2026 budget recommendations highlighted supporting our seniors by continuing to roll back the retirement tax, averaging $1,000 back to 500,000 senior households and allocating $2.7 million for nine new positions to enhance oversight of Michigan’s 424 nursing homes. This is how we Flip the Script on Aging

Honoring current and former service members during

Military Appreciation Month

We celebrate Military Appreciation Month in May to honor current and former service members and their families for their contributions, sacrifices and successes.

Last month, after years of advocacy by the Legislature and executive branch, the governor secured a new F15-EX fighter mission at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. Selfridge supports Michigan’s defense industry, contributing $30 billion to our state’s economy and supporting about 166,000 jobs. Selfridge directly supports other military installations in Michigan, including Detroit Arsenal; the only active duty military base in the state.

We are committed to making Michigan the premier choice for military service members, veterans and their families to live, work, serve and play.

Legislative Update

Rep. Tyrone Carter giving a speech on the House floor

As you know, many toxic political ideas from D.C. are currently being introduced in the Michigan Legislature. While I personally do not wish to message on or engage in fear mongering, scare tactics and empty rhetoric, I assure you that I will continue to fight these divisive and criminal proposals. I remain committed and focused on serving the needs of my constituents and bringing stability to Michigan.

  • I was proud to join my Democratic colleagues and the AFL-CIO earlier this month to highlight Workers Memorial Day, introduce the Workplace Safety Bill Package and honor the lives of those who have been injured, sickened or killed while simply doing their jobs. The Workers Safety Package is a bold, necessary step forward to better protect Michigan’s workers — and, by extension, all the families and communities that depend on them.

  • I had the privilege to once again introduce and testify on behalf of House Bills 4352-4355. This legislation seeks to provide police powers for the Great Lakes Water Authority. The Great Lakes Water Authority provides drinking water to approximately 40% of Michigan’s population and provides wastewater conveyance and treatment to approximately 30% of Michigan’s population. The GLWA footprint is quite large, extending from Monroe County on the south, to Flint and Genesee County on the north, and includes Lapeer, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne Counties.
Because of the dangers associated with chemicals used in their operations and because many of the facilities sit on the border with Canada, security is a key concern. Each month GLWA conducts between 3,000 and 7,000 security patrols to maintain the security of its facilities and respond to incidents that may arise. Providing GLWA with police powers will allow it to best maintain the security and operations of its geographically diverse facilities and will provide additional resources to support security within its service area.
  • Yesterday, the House passed a bipartisan bill package to enhance school safety and student mental health. The bills address safety drills, training and response plans and include updates to the OK2SAY program. The OK2SAY program has been an invaluable resource over the past ten years for Michigan students to speak up and report potential threats to their safety or the safety of others. It is safe, confidential and staffed by trained professionals 24/7. Students can submit tips via phone call, text, email, website or mobile app. The bills can be found here: HB 4222, HB 4223, HB 4225, HB 4226 HB 4229, HB 4315, HB 4258, HB 4259, and the bill package requres the following:
    • Regular updating of emergency response plans at each school district.
    • Safety drills for students.
    • Availability of an emergency and safety manager and mental health coordinator for middle schools
    • Standard safety trainings for employees on campus
    • OK2SAY tipline threats shared with law enforcement and school officials within 24 hours
    • Tracking of OK2SAY tips quarterly and inform the state’s School Safety and Mental Health Commission
  • This year’s budget process is well underway. The House has already voted on Republican-led appropriations bills, and the Senate passed their version of the budget this week. Both chambers will have to work together on a FY 26 budget to resolve differences and send a final version of the budget to the governor. Stay tuned for a special budget newsletter from my office that will highlight specific areas of funding.

Michigan Unclaimed Property

The Michigan Department of Treasury is encouraging individuals and businesses to visit the Michigan Unclaimed Property’s website to locate and claim potential lost or forgotten assets. The Treasury Department announced on Tuesday, May 13, that a website update features refreshed colors, simpler navigation and clearer instructions to guide users through the process.

The program holds millions of dollars in unclaimed property — including dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, stock certificates and the contents of unclaimed safe deposit boxes. These assets are turned over to the state when they are deemed lost or abandoned, as required by law and the program works to return those assets to their rightful owners.

Please click here to search the database for unclaimed property.
