LANSING, Mich., June 13, 2025 — On Tuesday, House Democrats introduced a comprehensive and equitable vision for Michigan’s School Aid budget, pushing forward a plan that reflects the needs of all children across the state — from urban districts like Flint to rural communities and everywhere in between. The Democratic proposal fully funds universal school meals, school transportation, mental health resources and safe learning environments.
After repeated pressure, House Republicans offered a second version of their education budget. Yet again, it slashes funding for vital services that working families depend on, including universal meals, special education, at-risk students, mental health and school safety, school district transportation costs and much, much more. Following her vote against the reckless Republican budget bills, state Rep. Cynthia Neeley (D-Flint) issued the following statement:
“For far too long, communities like ours have been asked to do more with less. This Republican budget plan is more of the same — more neglect, more hardship and more barriers for our children. Flint kids deserve the same resources and respect as any other student in this state. That means meals at school so they can focus on learning, buses that get them there safely and support services that help them grow and heal.
“That’s why I cannot, in good conscience, support a budget that leaves behind the very students who need the most support. Education is a promise we make to every child — a promise that says you matter, your future matters and we’re going to give you the tools to succeed. The Democratic plan honors that promise. We are investing in children, in equity and in Michigan’s future. We won’t accept less.”
