LANSING, Mich., July 1, 2025 — Today, Matt Hall spent nearly eight hours attempting to cobble together a fresh school aid budget ahead of time running out on the July 1 statutory deadline for completion. Despite attempts by Republican leadership to fund a theoretical roads plan on the backs of Michigan students, House Democrats stood united to protect the state’s kids, and as a result, Republicans were unable to put any legislation up for a vote.
“Matt Hall and Republican leadership tried to cram a process that normally requires months of good-faith work into one afternoon, and after wasting time and taxpayer dollars, the failure to vote on anything speaks for itself. We spent hours waiting to see something we could truly negotiate on, and the Republicans, under Hall’s leadership, could not produce an actual bill for review. What they asked us to operate on were rumors and promises, which would not have funded our schools or protected our students. If they had a real plan, they would have put it on paper and put it on the board, and Matt Hall failed on both fronts. For all his assurances that he’d get a budget done by the deadline, or that he didn’t need Democratic votes to do it, he demonstrated today that his talk isn’t just cheap, it’s worthless.”
