Hi Neighbor,

I wanted to share an update on legislation I’ve recently introduced that would help ensure Michigan students don’t lose the essential skill of cursive handwriting.

Many children today are not being taught how to read or write in cursive — a skill that remains important for practical reasons, like signing one’s name or  accessing key historical documents, including many of our nation’s founding texts.

That’s why I introduced legislation that would require the Michigan Department of Education to develop a list of model cursive handwriting programs. I’ve introduced this bill in each of my prior three terms, and in its most recent form, it passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support. This legislation is a commonsense step to ensure our students have the tools they need to succeed — not just in the classroom, but in life.

Please feel free to reach out to my office if you have any questions about this legislation or any state-level concerns at BrendaCarter@house.mi.gov or (517) 373-2577.
