Democratic lawmaker fights for budget that supports school communities

LANSING, Mich., July 3, 2025 — After an eight-hour session and months of inaction, Michigan House Republicans, led by Speaker Matt Hall, failed to negotiate a state budget or produce a finalized bill for review ahead of the July 1 statutory deadline. This failure in leadership has especially devastating consequences for Michigan’s schools. Without a state school aid budget, districts are working in the dark to finalize programming and staffing, contract for transportation, school meals, and so much more. This doesn’t just impact public schools. Charter and private schools also rely on state dollars and face similar challenges as they scramble to cover the shortfall. In response to Hall’s failure to deliver on his most important duty as House Speaker, state Rep. Carol Glanville (D-Walker) issued the following statement:

“Michiganders deserve better. Our schools need certainty to determine how many teachers they can retain, how many social workers and reading specialists they can hire, what programs they can offer and how many students they can support with counselors, meals and safe buildings. This lack of timely funding throws that planning into chaos.

“Every day this budget is delayed past July 1, House Republicans are disrupting learning, they are destabilizing classrooms and they are disrespecting the work of teachers and school staff across Michigan. Unfortunately, this budget process is far from over. As we count down the days to go back to school, my Democratic colleagues and I will continue fighting for a budget that invests in the programs that matter most — from child care to economic opportunity to public education.”
