📉 Report Shows MI Expected to Lose $1.1B in Federal Funding

The nonprofit Citizens Research Council of Michigan released a report last week outlining the anticipated impact of the recently signed H.R.1 (the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”). Their report indicates that due to federal income tax changes, Michigan will have to pay $1.1 billion in increased Medicaid and SNAP food benefits by 2032 and will lose $677 million in tax revenue next year. Over 15 per cent of Ingham County residents rely on SNAP, and 25 per cent rely on Medicaid.

🛡️ DHHS Issues Policy Change Barring Immigrants from Accessing Public Services

Last month, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a policy change to prevent undocumented immigrants — and many immigrants who are here legally – from accessing federal health centers, Head Start programs and various federally funded mental and behavioral health services. Under this change, only immigrants with “qualified alien” status are able to access these services, leaving out international students, some seasonal agricultural workers, people who’ve been granted temporary protected status, and those with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status. The Michigan Attorney General has joined a lawsuit with 20 other state attorneys general to stop this rule change.

🦅 Social Security Payments Will Follow Normal August Schedule, Overpayment Withholdings Go Into Effect

The Social Security Administration will be following their usual schedule to send out social security payments this month. As of July 24, recipients who have been overpaid and have not begun repayments are anticipated to see a 50 per cent withholding of their benefits. The full payment calendar for 2025 can be viewed here.
