“Residents across my district have shared with me their concerns about House Bill 5232 and Senate Bill 720, which propose changes to Michigan’s laws about local historic districts. In my district — and throughout Detroit and across Michigan — historic districts add to a city’s value by increasing historical knowledge, cultural value and local civic pride. These bills would weaken a law that has worked very well for more than 40 years.
It doesn’t make sense to make it harder to create or maintain a historic district when there are plenty of ordinances and processes, including appeals that work fine already. I love the historic preservation zones in House District 6, and I stand with residents of West Village, Indian Village, Corktown, Lafayette Park, Hubbard Farms and many others in opposing these bills and urge that they not move forward.”
