PONTIAC, Mich., Nov. 12, 2020 — Today, Gov. Whitmer made appointments to the Black Leadership Advisory Council, which was created to bring together a diverse group of Black Michiganders to serve in an advisory capacity to the governor and develop, review and recommend policies and actions designed to prevent and eradicate discrimination and racial inequity in Michigan. State Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) was appointed to serve on the council as an honorary representative of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus. In response Rep. Carter issued the following statement:
“When Gov. Whitmer initially announced the creation of this advisory council, I was overjoyed. Racial discrimination has long been a problem in Michigan, and while I know that the formation of this council will not single-handedly end racism in Michigan, it is a great step forward. By establishing this advisory council, Gov. Whitmer has shown herself to be a dedicated and passionate ally, and I am honored to serve as the liaison between the Black Leadership Advisory Council and the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus. Our fight for racial equity continues, and I look forward to working with the council to bring positive and lasting changes to the people of Michigan.”
