LANSING — Incoming House Democratic Floor Leader-elect state Rep. Christine Greig (D-Farmington Hills) has chosen four assistant floor leaders for the 99th session of the Michigan House of Representatives. They are state Rep. LaTanya Garrett (D-Detroit), state Rep. Patrick Green (D-Warren), state Rep.-elect Yousef Rabhi (D-Ann Arbor) and state Rep.-elect Brian Elder (D-Bay City).
“I look forward to working with these assistant floor leaders as we advocate for an agenda that brings better wages to Michigan workers, makes college more affordable and holds our government accountable to the people of our state,” Rep. Greig said. “We will work together to make sure that the priorities of Michigan’s working families are always heard on the House Floor.”
Rep. Garrett is about to begin her second term as a state representative. Before joining the Legislature, Garrett was a small-business owner, licensed first responder, community activist and a volunteer for several political campaigns. She has fought to restore state funding to communities and public schools, and has fought for pay equity and to protect the rights of consumers and seniors. She is a graduate of Wayne County Community College and has studied medical case management at Davenport University.
Rep. Green will begin his first full term as a state representative in January, after being elected to finish former state Rep. Derek Miller’s term in November. He has served as a member of the Warren City Council and volunteers with organizations such as the YMCA, Kiwanis Club and Focus Macomb. Rep. Green attended the University of Detroit and is an insurance agent and partner at a Sterling Heights insurance agency.
Rep.-elect Rabhi is a former Washtenaw County Commissioner, where he served on more than 20 different boards, committees and commissions covering public safety, public works, solid waste management, transportation, regional cooperation, human service funding and other issues. He helped develop the Washtenaw Dental Clinic, which serves uninsured and Medicaid-eligible residents. Rabhi earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental science from the University of Michigan.
Rep.-elect Elder served as a Bay County commissioner for eight years. He was actively involved in promoting economic development in his community, helping to create Bay Future Inc. and the Central Bark county dog park. During his time as a county commissioner, he worked with his colleagues to produce eight consecutive balanced budgets without layoffs or cuts to county services. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Wayne State University and a law degree from the UCLA School of Law.
“These assistant floor leaders bring a variety of experiences, skills and constituent bases to the table, and I know they will be strong advocates for the people of Michigan,” Rep. Greig said. “We’re ready to hit the ground running as soon as the 99th Session gets underway in January.”
