LANSING — The Michigan Legislative Black Caucus (MLBC) elected its eight remaining officers today during an early afternoon Special Call meeting held in the state Capitol building. The body elected the following members to serve as officers:
- State Rep. Sherry Gay-Dagnogo (D-Detroit), executive vice chair
- State Sen. Vincent Gregory (D-Lathrup Village), first vice chair
- State Rep. Leslie Love (D-Detroit), second vice chair
- State Rep. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor), secretary
- State Rep. Wendell L. Byrd (D-Detroit), treasurer
- State Rep. Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn), chaplain
- State Sen. Ian Conyers (D-Detroit), historian
- State Rep. Jewell Jones (D-Inkster), sergeant-at-arms/parliamentarian
State Rep. Sheldon Neeley (D-Flint) was elected last week to chair the MLBC for the 2017-18 legislative session.
“We now have an outstanding leadership team,” Rep. Neeley declared after the elections. “Our diversity and commitment to positive change for our constituents is reflected by the fine individuals who were chosen to chart our course. It’s time to get busy.”
The MLBC has grown from 19 to 23 members this legislative session, thanks to the election and addition of Reps. Jones, Hammoud, Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Township) and Yousef Rabhi (D-Ann Arbor). This year’s legislative priorities include criminal justice reform, education, Flint and Detroit water issues, and health care disparities.
The MLBC meetings are held at noon every second Tuesday of the month that the Legislature is in session, in Room 405 of the state Capitol building.
