LANSING — State Rep. Phil Phelps (D-Flushing) praised the passage today of a supplemental budget bill awarding $100 million in aid to the city of Flint. House Bill 4329 allocates $100 million in federal funding, adding to $20 million in state matching funds that have already been appropriated.
“I am grateful that my colleagues in the House worked so quickly to pass legislation that provides a substantial sum of money to aid the people of Flint, just less than a week after Congress released the funds to the state,” Rep. Phelps said. “The recovery process for the Flint community has been long, and we still have many years to go before we can truly say we’ve made it through this tragedy. These funds are valuable and will help the city make significant strides in replacing pipes that are still in desperate need of attention. I hope the Senate will reflect this same sense of urgency and pass this bill into law so that we can work to give the people of Flint the help and support they deserve.”
The funding will be distributed to the city of Flint in order to update the city’s infrastructure. The two largest sums of money from these funds will go toward service line replacement and improvements to the city’s water treatment plants. The city received this funding from Congress under the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act and is currently the only community eligible to receive funds under the act.
