ANN ARBOR — State Rep. Adam Zemke (D-Ann Arbor) was presented with an honorary degree in community service from Washtenaw Community College and served as a speaker at the 2017 commencement ceremony last Saturday, May 20.
“It was a humbling experience to be awarded this degree in community service from an institution I so greatly admire,” Zemke said. “I am committed to serving Washtenaw County because it is the right thing to do. I am immensely proud of the things we have been able to accomplish in partnership with WCC. To be recognized for this work is beyond any of my wildest expectations, and I cannot thank Washtenaw Community College enough for awarding me with this degree and inviting me to speak at their commencement ceremony.”
In his speech, Zemke recalled his own experiences working with community college graduates, the importance of community colleges to American higher education, and the critical role that Washtenaw Community College plays to problem solving in the community. He encouraged graduating students to keep an open mind, to never stop learning and to always work toward achieving their dreams.
“Community colleges play an ever increasing role in society, and have supplied us with some of today’s brightest minds,” Zemke said. “I hope the graduating class of 2017 takes pride in their new degrees, and I look forward to seeing the incredible contributions these students will make wherever their lives take them.”
