LANSING — The Michigan House of Representatives voted today to pass Senate Bills 242-244, legislation that allows a $200 million tax break for corporations. In response, state Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Township) issued the following statement:
“Today, I voted against legislation that would take the tax dollars of hardworking Michiganders and give them directly to corporations. These bills further slant the playing field against Michigan’s small businesses and working families. Recent history has shown that these policies have failed to put our state on the path to an economy that works for everyone. Instead of investing in our schools and fixing our roads for the last six years, Republicans in Lansing have given corporations a $2 billion annual tax break — which has done little to raise wages, secure better retirements or create jobs.
“The real way to create jobs is by empowering small businesses, improving public schools, investing in infrastructure, and creating thriving communities that will attract and retain the type of talent Michigan needs to build today’s economy.
“We can, and must, do better for working people. Despite the passage of these bills, I will continue fighting to create an environment where small businesses can thrive, where we invest in skilled trades training, where workers’ rights are protected, and where our state prioritizes communities over corporations.”
