LANSING — Kent County District Court Judge Christina Elmore recently dismissed charges brought by Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette against eight workers at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. In response, state Rep. Winnie Brinks (D-Grand Rapids) issued the following statement:
“I have fought for years to bring attention to the conditions and problems at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans after experienced state employees were dismissed and a private company was hired to supply caregivers to the home. I am disappointed that the Attorney General has not taken action against the decision-makers at the home who allowed the horrible mistreatment and neglect of our veterans to continue. Instead, what we got from Attorney General Schuette was a political stunt with charges filed against front-line employees who were not responsible for care in the home, only to have those charges dismissed. It is time for a real investigation to take place and for those responsible for the abysmal conditions at the home to be held accountable. It is time for the Snyder-Schuette administration to step up, do its job and give our veterans the justice they deserve."
