LANSING — Tonight, the House of Representatives voted down House Bill 5013, which would make sweeping changes to Michigan’s no-fault auto insurance system. In response, state Rep. John Chirkun (D-Roseville) issued the following statement:
“I voted no on House Bill 5013 because my constituents need real rate relief on their auto insurance, and this bill won’t give it to them. This bill only offers lower costs if drivers agree to reduced coverage and a cap on lifetime benefits. That’s not what drivers want, and they don’t have to accept it because there’s a better plan we could be considering. The Fair and Affordable No-Fault Reform package provides rate relief while maintaining medical benefits, fighting fraud and prohibiting the use of non-driving factors — such as education level, address and age — in determining policy costs. This plan deserves a hearing and would deliver the no-fault reforms that would truly benefit all Michigan drivers.”
