LANSING — This evening the Michigan House of Representatives voted on House Bill 5013, which makes various changes to the state’s auto no-fault insurance system. The bill failed to pass and in response, state Rep. Brian K. Elder (D-Bay City) issued the following statement:
“House Bill 5013 represented fake insurance reform. For the people of my district, it threatened to wipe out their hard-earned assets if they were ever unfortunate enough to be in an auto accident. HB 5013 had no guaranteed rate reductions—only guaranteed cuts in benefits that would have ultimately shifted costs over to Medicaid and the taxpayers. We need real auto insurance reform. We have a plan to make hospitals and insurance companies and lawyers come together and strike a deal that makes sense for our constituents. The framework of the bipartisan Fair and Affordable No-Fault Reform bills is a place to start. I hope that’s where we go next.”
