LANSING — This week, Republican legislators are considering efforts to strip away critically important benefits for retired police and firefighters, such as health care. In response, state Rep. Sheldon Neeley (D-Flint) issued the following statement:
“Instead of considering raiding the well-earned health care benefits of our police officers and firefighters, we should be looking at ways to address the root of the municipal budget crisis in Michigan. We need to better fund our local governments, which have lost $9 billion to revenue sharing in the last 17 years. Stealing the earned benefits of our emergency responders is simply unacceptable, and I will stand against any plan that attempts to do so.”
