LANSING — Today, the House of Representatives voted on House Resolution 234 calling on Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon to resign or be removed by the Board of Trustees. In response to his yes-vote, state Rep. Phil Phelps (D-Flushing) issued the following response:
“I’m glad my Republican colleagues now see that if you oversee a system that fails people, you should be held accountable. It’s imperative we listen to anyone who says they have been harmed. The horrifying treatment these women were subjected to is absolutely unacceptable and can never happen again. The person in charge of any institution is responsible for the culture within it. If that culture is afraid to notify leadership of something that is causing harm, or they do nothing about allegations of harm, that officer’s leadership has failed. There seems to be a troubling pattern of cases like this across state government. Today, the House of Representatives said enough is enough! It seems we are finally ready to put politics aside and rid all levels of Michigan government of this terrible culture. I will stand with my colleagues to do whatever we must to gain back the trust of Michigan residents.”
