LANSING — Gov. Rick Snyder has appointed Bishop Ira Combs to the Michigan Civil Rights Commission. Combs has a history of opposing LGBT equality measures, such as city of Jackson’s non-discrimination ordinance, and joined a lawsuit that attempted to stop same-sex marriage in Michigan. In response, House Democratic Floor Leader Christine Greig (D-Farmington Hills) issued the following statement:
“On many occasions, Gov. Rick Snyder has called for Michigan to be a welcoming state for everyone who lives here and for businesses who want to locate and bring jobs here. Placing people like Bishop Ira Combs on the Michigan Civil Rights Commission sends the signal that, in fact, Michigan is not welcoming to people in the LGBT community, and that our state is going backward instead of forward as far as equality is concerned. I urge Gov. Snyder to roll out the welcome matt for our state by withdrawing the appointment of Combs to the Civil Rights Commission.”
