LANSING — March 27, 2018, has been named Education Day in the state of Michigan thanks to a resolution introduced by state Rep. Robert Wittenberg (D-Huntington Woods) and passed by the Michigan House of Representatives today.
“When we talk about educating our kids, we sometimes say that they need a good education to ‘make a better living,’ but making a better living doesn’t just mean making a bigger paycheck,” Rep. Wittenberg said. “Education helps young people make a better living by opening their eyes to the humanities, introducing them to the questions yet to be answered by science and sparking within them a desire to know more and become better human beings. Education unlocks doors and invites young people to step forward to meet their future.”
March 27 marks the birthday of the Rabbi (“Rebbe”) Menachem Mendel Schneerson, a leader of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement who emphasized an appreciation for lifelong learning. In 1978, Congress asked President Jimmy Carter to designate his birthday as Education and Sharing Day USA, which has been recognized by every president who followed him.
“This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Chabad Lubavitch in Michigan by Rebbe Schneerson, and thousands of Michigan residents have been enriched by his organization’s efforts to encourage lifelong learning,” Rep. Wittenberg said. “I commend their work, and the work of all educators who help others build opportunities for themselves by fostering a love of learning.”
