LANSING — Today, state Rep. Brian K. Elder (D-Bay City) voted against the Michigan House of Representatives’ omnibus budget for fiscal year 2018-19 and the House School omnibus budget for fiscal year 2018-19. In response, Rep. Elder issued the following statement on his no vote on both bills:
“A budget is a statement of priorities, and by the looks of the budgets voted out of the House today, Republicans’ priorities are misguided, heartless and bought by wealthy CEOs. These budgets do nothing to help improve the lives of working families, and instead rig the rules in favor of foreign corporations and special interests. House Democrats saw an opportunity to dedicate more money to fixing our state’s disgraceful roads, yet Republicans refused. We had an opportunity to protect our precious natural resources from corporate greed, but Republicans refused. We had an opportunity to ensure our state’s schools are funded equitably and are transparent in how they use our tax dollars — again, Republicans refused. These budgets do not reflect the priorities of my people, which is why I could not vote for them today.”
