Statement from House Democratic Leader Sam Singh (D-East Lansing) on appeal of the Court of Claims ruling that $5 million allotted for private schools in recent budgets is unconstitutional

LANSING — Recently a Michigan Court of Claims judge ruled that the two allotments for private schools totaling $5 million in the fiscal year 2016-17 and 2017-18 budgets are unconstitutional in Michigan, as the state constitution does not allow taxpayer dollars to go to non-public schools. Today, state Attorney General Bill Schuette filed an appeal of that ruling. In response, House Democratic Leader Sam Singh (D-East Lansing) issued the following statement:

“Once again, Attorney General Schuette has put the interests of wealthy political donors ahead of everyday Michiganders. I am disappointed that instead of fighting for the families of Flint or holding Enbridge accountable for the poor oversight of their pipelines, Attorney General Schuette has chosen to waste time and taxpayer dollars on a fool’s errand to take resources away from public schools. After seven years of failed leadership, it’s time for the attorney general to put aside his political ambitions and step up to bat for Michigan families.”
