LANSING — Today, the House of Representatives voted on a bipartisan package of bills aimed at combatting sexual assault in the state of Michigan. State Rep. Sara Cambensy (D-Marquette) sponsored House Bill 5982, which would prohibit a person from intentionally using his or her professional position of authority over another person to prevent, or attempt to prevent, a person from reporting an alleged violation to a Title IX coordinator at a college or university. In response, Rep. Cambensy issued the following statement:
“My bill will give students the voice they need and hold people in power accountable if they refuse to respond properly to allegations of sexual assault. I’d like to thank the brave women who came forward to hopefully put an end to complacency on our campuses and turn the tide to create a new culture of transparency and safety for all students going forward. This package is an important first step in preventing sexual assault and protecting survivors, and I am proud to be part of it.”
