LANSING — Late last night, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that a ballot initiative to put the redistricting process back in the hands of the people will be on the ballot in November. In response state Rep. Sara Cambensy (D-Marquette) issued the following statement:
“I am thrilled to hear about the Michigan Supreme Court’s ruling that will allow the issue of voter redistricting to go on the ballot. People have become increasingly aware of this problem in recent years, as we’ve learned how gerrymandering can affect the outcome of elections and allow politicians to choose their voters instead of the other way around. I applaud the nonpartisan work of Voters Not Politicians in bringing this issue to the ballot and into public consciousness. Now the people will decide whether they want politicians to draw their own district lines or a bipartisan citizen commission to make those decisions.”
