LANSING — Today, the House of Representatives voted on the One Fair Wage and MI Time to Care citizen ballot initiatives, which would increase the minimum wage and guarantee paid sick leave for all, respectively. The proposals passed. In response, state Rep. Vanessa Guerra (D-Saginaw) issued the following statement:
“Hundreds of thousands of Michiganders supported these policies not so that Republicans could rewrite these for them later on, but so that they could make their voices heard in the ballot box come November. Voters should have the opportunity to judge these proposals on their own merits — not have Republicans intervene now so they can gut them in the future. Republicans have had plenty of opportunities to act on these policies in the past but they did not. Though I will continue to advocate for strong benefits and paycheck security, I refuse to play games with the livelihoods of my friends and neighbors back home, which is why I could not in good conscience vote in favor of these initiatives today.”
