LANSING — Today, the House of Representatives voted on the One Fair Wage and MI Time to Care citizen ballot initiatives, which would increase the minimum wage and guarantee paid sick leave for all, respectively. The proposals passed. In response, state Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Township) issued the following statement:
“Without question, Michigan’s working families deserve to earn strong wages and have the ability to take care of themselves and their families in times of sickness. These sensible policies are the result of overwhelming support from around the state, and they are the same issues I have been fighting for since I took office last year. I voted in support of these proposals today because I care about Downriver families, and this is an opportunity to make their lives better. Simple as that.
“Moving forward, we must ensure that these citizen led proposals are fully implemented as the people of Michigan intended. Let me be clear: I will fight back against any partisan political maneuvering later this year that attempts to undo the good done here today. A reasonable minimum wage and earned paid sick leave help ensure that every Downriver resident can get ahead, and I will stand against any attack that robs them of that opportunity.”
