LANSING — Today, state Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Township) introduced House Resolution 409 urging President Trump and Andrew Wheeler, the acting Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator, to reverse their decision to close the EPA’s Large Lakes Research Station in Grosse Ile.
“The EPA station in Grosse Ile plays a critical role in our state’s response to environmental emergencies,” said Camilleri. “At a time when Michigan is experiencing a flurry of environmental crises, closing this facility will result in delayed response times and, in turn, put our families and our state’s natural resources at risk.”
In addition to the resolution, Rep. Camilleri joined state Rep. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit) in sending a letter to Acting Administrator Wheeler detailing their concerns on the station’s closure and urging him to reconsider.
“The effectiveness of the Grosse Ile EPA station in mitigating environmental disasters and implementing the highly successful Great Lakes Restoration Initiative here in Michigan cannot be overstated,” said Chang. “I hope President Trump and Acting Administrator Wheeler will reconsider their decision to close the station as they reflect on its importance to the people of Michigan.”
