LANSING — Earlier this fall, the Michigan Auditor General released an audit of the Child Protective Services (CPS) investigators and supervisors. The audit found that CPS failed to perform a number of required actions including criminal background checks, contacting mandatory reporters when investigating abuse, and conducting investigations within the required timeframe. Today, the House Oversight Committee held another hearing on that audit with DHHS and CPS officials testifying. In response, state Rep. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores), Democratic vice chairman of the committee, issued the following statement:
“Children across Michigan depend on us and right now, they’re being failed. It is vital that investigators, supervisors, and CPS workers have the support and resources they need to do their jobs and help these children. I hope that this audit will galvanize the Legislature to act quickly to ensure that in the future, they do.”
