LANSING — Today, Legislative Republicans passed two bills, SB 1171 and SB 1175, gutting the citizen-led ballot initiatives that were passed into law back in September. In response, state Rep. Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:
“Nearly 400,000 Michiganders supported these initiatives in the hopes of making a better life for themselves and their neighbors. I stood with them in September when I voted to send the proposals to the ballot, and I stand with them now as I oppose the gutting of these protections. Taking away the rights of Michiganders to earn a strong paycheck and take care of their family is unconscionable, unconstitutional and unacceptable. While I am not surprised at the actions taken by legislative Republicans, I am disappointed that they would rather prioritize corporate profits and betray the people of Michigan in such a blatant fashion.”
