LANSING — Today, House Republicans rushed through House Bill 6553 to allow the Legislature an absolute right to intervene in court proceedings, effectively undermining the power of the attorney general’s office and ignoring the will of the voters who elected Attorney General-elect Nessel last month. In response to its passage, state Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Township) issued the following statement:
“The ongoing theme of this lame duck agenda has been to undercut the will of Michigan families, and HB 6553 is no different. This bill threatens the institutional checks and balances that make our democracy strong by taking away authority from one branch solely because it will be occupied by a member of another political party. Instead of tackling the real issues facing our families, this bill is just another partisan political maneuver, and that is not the kind of legislation the people of Downriver sent me to Lansing to support.”
