LANSING — Last night, House Republicans, once again, rushed through House Bill 6553 to allow the Legislature an absolute right to intervene in court proceedings, effectively undermining the power of the attorney general’s office and ignoring the will of the voters who elected Attorney General-elect Nessel last month. In response, state Rep. Tenisha Yancey (D-Harper Woods) issued the following statement:
“With the entire nation watching, Republican legislators proved once and for all that political power is more important to them than the rule of law. This bill is a deliberate attack on the power of the Attorney General to act as the state’s top lawyer and law enforcement official; the timing of it makes the motivation behind it all the more obvious. The people of Michigan spoke, and the majority party would rather dismantle our democracy than listen to voters.”
