LANSING — Today, House Republicans approved House Bill 5526 during a marathon late-night session, establishing a school ranking system to label Michigan schools without proposing resources or solutions to address school improvement. In response to its passage, state Rep. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor) issued the following statement:
“As a former educator, I am appalled by this legislation. It is alarming just how far removed this is from the real and critical concerns our public schools are facing; our schools are grossly underfunded, our classrooms are overcrowded, our teachers are not being paid like the professionals they are, teachers are buying supplies with their own money, and that’s just to name a few. If Michigan wants our public education system to be competitive, we should be providing them with the resources they need to succeed – just like the top 10 education states already do. This is shameful legislation that will fail our students, teachers and communities and they deserve better.”
