LANSING — Today, state Rep. LaTanya Garrett (D-Detroit) was named an assistant House Democratic floor leader for the 2019-2020 legislative term. Rep. Garrett is beginning her third term representing the 7th House District and previously served on the Energy and Commerce and Trade Committees.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to continue our work to tackle the issues that matter most to the families of Detroit and Michigan, and to do so from a leadership position,” Rep. Garrett said. “The people of our state deserve better roads, access to quality education and affordable health care, and I am going to keep fighting to find quality solutions to these problems that put Michiganders first.”
As assistant Democratic floor leader, Garrett will be working directly with Democratic Floor Leader Yousef Rahbi (D-Ann Arbor) to direct House Democrats’ legislative priorities during session. Before joining the Legislature, Rep. Garrett worked as a community activist and served metro Detroit as a licensed first responder, in addition to being a small business owner. She is a graduate of Henry Ford High School, Life Support Training Institute, and Wayne County Community College.
