LANSING — Today, House Democratic Floor Leader Yousef Rabhi (D-Ann Arbor) announced the assistant democratic floor leaders for Michigan’s 100th Legislature. Serving during the 2019-2020 session will be state Reps. LaTanya Garrett (D-Detroit), Sara Cambensy (D-Marquette), Alex Garza (D-Taylor) and Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia).
“Our new Democratic caucus includes a diverse and accomplished group ready to lead our state toward a better future, and I’m excited to have a leadership team that reflects that dynamic,” Rep. Rabhi said. “As we begin this new legislative session, we have the opportunity to make good on our promises to Michigan’s working families to protect our water and air, fix our roads, ensure a quality public education for our students, and propel our economy forward.”
State Rep. LaTanya Garrett is beginning her third term representing the 7th House District and previously served on the Energy and Commerce and Trade Committees. Before joining the Legislature, she worked as a community activist and served metro Detroit as a licensed first responder, in addition to being a small business owner. She is a graduate of Henry Ford High School, Life Support Training Institute, and Wayne County Community College.
State Rep. Sara Cambensy is serving her second term representing the 109th House District and previously served on the Agriculture, Local Government, and Natural Resources Committees. Before serving in the Legislature, Rep. Cambensy worked for Marquette Public Schools as the director of adult education, in addition to serving as a Marquette city commissioner from 2012 to 2017. Rep. Cambensy graduated with a bachelor’s in education and a master’s in public administration from Northern Michigan University where she was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Award for the MPA Program.
State Rep. Alex Garza is serving his first term representing the 12th House District. Prior to his election, Rep. Garza served on the Taylor City Council from Nov. 2013 to the end of last year and was the youngest and first person of color elected to local office in the city’s history. Rep. Garza previously worked for both former state Reps. Stephanie Chang and Rashida Tlaib as a legislative aide. He attended both the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Baker College, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science and an associate’s degree in business management, respectively.
State Rep. Laurie Pohutsky is serving her first term representing 19th House District, which encompasses the majority of the city of Livonia. Rep. Pohutsky graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in microbiology and has worked in the fields of food safety, toxicology and health care. She is a member of the Livonia Democratic Club, is active in Michigan United and lives in Livonia with her husband Mark and their rescue pets.
