LANSING — Last night, the Speaker of the House announced the committee assignments for the 2019-20 legislative session. State Representative Mari Manoogian (D-Birmingham) was appointed to serve on the House Committees on Commerce and Tourism; Energy; and Military, Veterans, and Homeland Security.

“I am excited to bring my security policy and international relations expertise to the table addressing critical issues for the people of Michigan,” Manoogian said. “When it comes to energy policy, small business growth, or veteran services, many of the problems facing Michigan are being answered in state and local governments around the country. My experience at the federal level gave me insight into some of those creative solutions, and I look forward to bringing those insights to the table in my committees.”

Manoogian was born and raised in Birmingham and is serving her first term representing the 40th District, which includes Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, and a portion of West Bloomfield Township. Prior to joining the Legislature, she served in various capacities of public service at the federal level, including interning for then-Congressman John D. Dingell, working with the Council on Foreign Relations, and assisting Ambassador Samantha Power at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. Manoogian also worked at the U.S. Department of State where she served with foreign and civil service officers. She currently serves as assistant Democratic whip for the House Democrats.
