LANSING — Today, state Rep. Karen Whitsett (D-Detroit) introduced a resolution to dedicate this January as the 90th Anniversary of Dr. King’s birth. The resolution passed unanimously.
“Often when we think of Dr. King’s fight and mission we think of overt hatred or opposition,” Rep. Whitsett explained. “While those things were true then and are still true today there was a broader message. It is not enough that we only say that racism and discrimination are wrong. We must take action to assure that our fellow citizens are treated equally under the law and in our society.”
Dr. King’s legacy is still an inspirational example of how to raise objections and affect change within our society without hate. Even though his mission and his methods faced strong opposition from a good majority of the country while he was alive, his efforts and sacrifice are remembered today by a grateful nation.
