LANSING — Tonight, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivered her first State of the State address, outlining her vision for the state and calling for bipartisan collaboration to address the issues facing Michigan’s working families. In response, state Rep. Leslie Love (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:
“As I listened to Gov. Whitmer give her State of the State address tonight, I was struck by how much more reflective of Michigan our legislature and government as a whole has become. We have more women and people of color serving in the Legislature than ever before — and that is something to be excited about. For us to create lasting change and real solutions for Michigan’s working families we have to hear from a diverse array of thought and experience, and I am finally starting to see that in the Legislature. It makes me hopeful for the future and more energized than ever for the work ahead of us. I am excited to roll up my sleeves and work with my colleagues on the issues facing our communities, such as addressing our crumbling infrastructure, sufficiently funding our public schools and increasing access to mental healthcare.”
Rep. Love was joined by Bryan Powell, Secretary-Treasurer of Detroit Wayne County Port Authority, as well as the assistant vice president of the Seafarers International Union (SIU) and assistant vice president for the SIU-affiliated Seafarers Entertainment and Allied Trades Union (SEATU).
