DETROIT — Yesterday, the Detroit Police Department held a hearing to conclude its investigation into the behavior and actions of a Detroit police officer after a video he recorded on Snapchat during a traffic stop was discovered. The troubling video shows the officer, Gary Steele, mocking Ariel Moore, a 23-year-old African American, while on duty. As the hearing concluded, state Rep. Sherry Gay-Dagnogo (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:
“Since the discriminatory and insensitive actions of Officer Steele and his partner were put on display for the world to see, women and men across our community and throughout the country have come together to stand in solidarity with Ms. Moore. No person deserves to be discriminated against or dehumanized, especially not by a member of law enforcement. I appreciate Chief Craig’s commitment to a thorough investigation of Steele’s actions; and while I acknowledge the additional time needed to ensure the integrity of the process and the rights afforded by union contracts, I am confident that the findings of today’s hearing will yield a favorable outcome for our community and be a strong step toward regaining community trust.”
