LANSING — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer presented her budget recommendations today for the 2019-20 fiscal year to a joint meeting of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees. Among her recommendations were significant allotments to clean up and protect our water and increasing school funding by $507 million—the largest increase in a generation. In response to her recommendations, state Rep. Tyrone Carter (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:

“The students of Detroit, Ecorse, and River Rouge know better than anyone what it means to grow up in a state that doesn’t prioritize their education. Consistent underfunding of our city’s schools has created tremendous obstacles to success for our kids, and it has set our state behind. I am grateful that Gov. Whitmer’s proposed budget aims to level the playing field so that every child can receive the world-class education they deserve and I look forward to seeing it implemented.”
