LANSING — Today, state Rep. Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia) held a press conference alongside House Democratic colleagues and statewide stakeholders to introduce legislation to restore the state’s ability to address the many public health and environment crises Michigan families are facing. House Bill 4386 would repeal the so-called “no stricter than federal” law which prohibits state agencies from issuing rules or guidelines more stringent than the relevant federal standard. In response, state Rep. Kevin Coleman (D-Westland), who attended the press conference in support, issued the following statement:
“Michigan’s people elected us to create policies uniquely tailored to the needs of this state–the only state surrounded by one-fifth of the world’s fresh water. On the other hand, federal officials craft policies for the entire country. We need to realize that the best policies for Florida, Mississippi or California may not be the best for Michigan, and our state agencies should be able to act quickly in implementing effective rules that protect our environment and health.”
