LANSING — State Rep. Padma Kuppa (D-Troy) introduced House Resolution 52 today to declare March 22, 2019 as World Water Day in the state of Michigan. The resolution was adopted unanimously by the house.
“As Michiganders, we know better than anyone the importance of water, and the crucial role it plays in our lives,” Kuppa said. “With over 20 percent of the world’s freshwater supply right in our backyards, it is up to us to lead the fight for the responsible, sustainable management of our most precious natural resource. Access to clean water is a right, and we need to ensure no family in this state ever has to worry about the quality of their water again.”
World Water Day is an annual United Nations observance held each year on March 22 as a way of bringing attention to the need for protecting freshwater resources. The annual international declaration provides an opportunity to learn more about water-related issues and bring people together to take action. This year’s theme is ‘Leaving no one behind’, as billions of people are still living without access to safe water around the world today. As the Great Lakes state, and given the history of water related crises, these issues are especially pertinent to Michigan. The resolution is a way of formally recognizing the crucial responsibility all Michiganders have to protect their waters for current and future generations.
