LANSING — Following weeks of bipartisan negotiations, the House passed a sweeping overhaul of Michigan’s auto insurance system today. The final bill includes several provisions put forward by House Democrats including the elimination of non-driving rate-setting factors, guaranteed rate reductions and increased consumer protections. In response, state Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Township) issued the following statement:
“Drivers Downriver and across our state deserve real rate relief. They have spoken loud and clear on the need to finally address the discriminatory insurance practice of setting rates for Michiganders based on non-driving factors like who they are and where they work. This plan addresses these critical shortfalls in our current auto insurance system while strengthening accountability and transparency, and most of all it provides the real rate relief drivers need now. We know there is more work to be done in the future, but we have made significant progress here and I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and build upon that progress."
