LANSING — Following weeks of bipartisan negotiations, the House passed a sweeping overhaul of Michigan’s auto insurance system today. The final bill includes several provisions put forward by House Democrats including the elimination of non-driving rate-setting factors, guaranteed rate reductions and increased consumer protections. In response, state Rep. Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia) issued the following statement:
“Insurance companies have been allowed to take advantage of Michiganders for far too long, and I’m proud to say the plan we passed today puts us on a path to bring those practices to an end. Of course, there is still work to be done to empower DIFS to hold insurers accountable and to ensure that no one is forced to pay higher rates just because of where they live, but I believe we are headed in the right direction. I hope that we can continue to put our differences aside and commit ourselves to improving the lives of the people of our state going forward.”
